Col Carl E. Reinke (USAF, Ret), age 82 of Oshkosh, passed away Thursday night, March 30, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center with family by his side.
He was born April 20, 1923 and raised on a farm near Oshkosh. He is the son of Rudolph and Dorothea (Helms) Reinke. He married Berniece Burbey May 17, 1947 in Oshkosh.
Carl had a love for flying and soloed in 1941 under Steve Wittman. He entered the US Navy in late 1942 and was assigned to the Southwest Pacific as a quartermaster-signalman and also a member of an underwater demolition team during World War II. In 1944, he returned to Iowa for US Navy Preflight School Training as an enlisted man. In early 1950, he switched to the US Air Force, attended flight training, and received his commission in 1951.
He retired after 27 years of distinguished military service with assignments in Canada, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, Maine, Texas, Nebraska, and Arkansas. One example of his exciting career includes being the first person to successfully fly and land a B-52G with four engines shut down on one side due to series of explosions and engine and wing fires. He accumulated nearly 12,000 hours of US Air Force flight time in a variety of aircraft including the B-47 and B-52.
He returned to Oshkosh in 1970 and was active with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Carl loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, landscaping, and tinkering in his workshop. He was a member of St Vincent's Catholic Church.
He is loved and will be missed by his wife of 58 years, Berniece; 2 children, Diane (Faehling) Clark of Oostburg and Robert Faehling of West Bend; 7 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
Preceding Carl in death are his parents and two brothers, John and Clarence.
The funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at St Vincent Catholic Church, 216 W. South Park Ave, with Father Van DeKreeke officiating, assisted by Deacon Raymond Brandenstein.
