Clifford R. Ramsay, age 88, died peacefully Wednesday, May 23, 2012.
He was born Aug. 21, 1923, to Raymond and Meta Ramsay in New London, Wis. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1941. He served in World War II as a radio signalman in the Army's 96th Infantry Division, in the Leyte and Okinawa campaigns in the Pacific Theater.
After his honorable discharge from the Army by March 1946, he married Alberta "Betty" Adams on June 12, 1946. He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering, graduating in 1949 in electrical engineering. In the summer of 1952 he moved to Oshkosh as a part owner of Ra-Tel TV Sales & Service, selling and servicing television sets and radios until Ra-Tel's closure in the mid-1980s. He contributed to Oshkosh in many civic efforts, including the Drum and Bugle Corps, the Jaycees, the effort to bring the council-manager form of government to the city in 1957, and mentoring of high school students through an on-the-job training program. He was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oshkosh. After Betty's death in 1975, he married Margaret "Marge" Stegert on April 11, 1981.
He is survived by two sons, Bill (Kathy) Ramsay of Oshkosh and Chuck (Liz) Ramsay of Virginia Minn.; one daughter, Diane Ramsay, of Washington, D.C.; three grandsons, Scott (Amy) Ramsay of La Crosse, Wis., Jeff Ramsay of Oshkosh and Joe Ramsay of Virginia Minn.; and one great-granddaughter, Gianna Ramsay of La Crosse, Wis.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Betty, on June 3, 1975; his second wife, Marge, on Feb. 3, 2011; and his grandson, Timothy Ramsay, on Jan. 28, 2011.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorials in Clifford's name be donated directly to dementia or diabetes research.
