Obituary

Lee Nathaniel Newcomer, age 92, of Oshkosh, passed away Monday, March 13, 2006 at Evergreen Retirement Community. He was born on May 1, 1913 in Bryan, Ohio, the son of Chauncey and Claire (Sands) Newcomer. Lee married Dorothy Virginia Forsythe in July of 1948 and she preceded him in death on April 24, 1999.
After receiving an undergraduate degree at DePauw University, Lee pursued a Masters Degree at Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in History at Columbia University. World War II interrupted these studies when he joined the Coast Guard, serving as an officer in the Pacific. Upon returning to New York City, he finished his Ph.D., met his wife, Dorothy, and accepted his first post as a history professor at Bowling Green University in Ohio. Lee's next position was in the History Department at Memphis State University until 1960, when he moved to Oshkosh to teach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. While at UW-Oshkosh, he directed the African Studies Program and served as a Fulbright Professor to Uganda, East Africa. Lee volunteered in many community activities. Upon retirement in 1983, Lee pursued his life-long passions of travel, gardening, sailing, reading, and music with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Surviving are six children: Alexandra Newcomer of Arlington, Virginia; Claire Newcomer of Arlington, Virginia; Wendy (Richard) Edson, MD. of Annapolis, Maryland; Susanne (David) Breckenfelder of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; Nathaniel Newcomer of Milwaukee; and Timothy (Susan) Newcomer of Redding, California; five grandchildren: Elizabeth Breckenfelder, Peter Jacobi, Katherine Breckenfelder, Samuel Newcomer, and Benjamin Newcomer; and a sponsored son: Samuel (Sandra) Muinde of Oshkosh. Preceding Lee in death are his wife; parents, a sister: Elizabeth Newcomer Fenton; and a brother: Arthur Sands Newcomer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 17, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 311 Division Street, with Reverend Steven Powers officiating. A time of visitation and support will be held on Friday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church. Lee will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Dorothy, in Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan, Ohio.
