Dr. Merlin H. Schwertfeger, Ph.D., age 85, of Oshkosh, passed away at Aurora Medical Center, Tuesday morning, February 28, 2006. He was born on December 7, 1920 the son of the late David and Sarah (Rosenthal) Schwertfeger.
Merlin served his country in the Army Signal Corps for 3 1/2 years during WWII. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Oshkosh State Teachers College, a Masters Degree in Zoology from UW-Madison, and his Ph.D. in Entomology from UW-Madison in 1957. Merlin was an instructor of Biology at Marquette University, an assistant and Associate Professor of Biology at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, and from 1963 until his retirement in 1983, he was Professor of Biology at UW-Oshkosh. Upon retirement, Merlin enjoyed many wonderful trips, which took him all over the world. Surviving Merlin are many cousins, friends, and his cat "Bobby".
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels, 1025 Oregon Street, with Reverend Ralph Hanusa officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visitation and support will be held on Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorials are requested to the Oshkosh Humane Society in Merlin's name.
