Pearl L. Wiley, age 93, of Oshkosh died Friday, June 30, 2006 at Evergreen Retirement Community. She was born October 23, 1912, in Hurdland, Missouri, to Edgar S. and Grace Boltz Smith. Pearl was united in marriage to Guy E. Wiley, Jr., on April 4, 1936 in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Wiley preceded her in death on July 24, 1990.
Pearl had a Life Certificate from Northeast Missouri Teacher's College in Kirksville, Missouri, and taught for seven years in Missouri before they made their home in Oshkosh in 1939.
Receiving her B. S. degree from Wisconsin State College in Oshkosh in 1962, she was also licensed by the state of Wisconsin to teach remedial reading. In 1976 she was honored by selection to the Outstanding Leaders in Elementary and Secondary Education and retired from teaching third grade at Lakeside school in the Oshkosh school district in 1978. She was a member of the Oshkosh NEA and Wisconsin NEA.
For over sixty years Pearl was a member of the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church. She served as local Sunday School Superintendent, District Children's Chair, and established and was director and counselor of the first day camp and junior camp at Asbury Acres. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, Priscilla Circle, Friendship Circle and Neighborhood Center.
For many years, Pearl was affiliated with the Auxiliary of the Wisconsin Osteopathic Association of Physicians and Surgeons. Pearl was a member of the Winnebago Council of Camp Fire Girls, Bluebird and Camp Fire leader, and past president of the Leaders' Association. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and scouting supporter.
Pearl was a member of the first Evergreen Retirement Community Board of Directors, serving for nine years, and organized the Evergreen Manor Auxiliary. She continued volunteering over the years on various committees. In 1950, she was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star Oriental Chapter #16.
After retirement, Pearl was an active member of the Fox Valley Campers and Hikers (and eaters), Busy Bees Homemakers, Oshkosh Seniors Center (tour committee), AARP, Winnebago County Retired Educators' Association, WREA, Habitat for Humanity, Museum Auxiliary, and eleven-year volunteer at the Food Pantry. She enjoyed reading, camping and traveling. Pearl and her husband visited all 50 states and traveled on many trips abroad.
Surviving is a daughter, Grace (Tom) Spalding of Estherville, Iowa, and a son, Guy E. (Crystal) Wiley, III of Erie, Colorado. Also surviving are three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Robert (Kim) Spalding and their daughters, Kate and Ava, of Seattle, Washington; David (Sue) Spalding and their children, Will and Hannah, of St. Michael, Minnesota; and Chelsey Wiley of Erie, Colorado. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Lenora Smith Humphries, of Summerfield, Florida and Mary Grace Wiley Matousek, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive her. Her parents; her husband; her sister, Maxie Gardner; and her brothers, Claude E. and William A. Smith, preceded her in death.
Funeral services that will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 5th at the Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., with the Reverend Barry Yarbro officiating. Friends and relatives may visit with the family the hour preceding the service. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Private interment will be held at the Lake View Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Algoma Blvd. United Methodist Church or the Evergreen Retirement Community.
